How to repair woolen clothes?

It's easier than you think. Collinda, gives you some handy tips in this blog.
We all have a few favorite woolen garments in our drawers that never go out of style. Some woolen garments can even have sentimental value, because they were hand knitted by a loving aunt.

Wool is a delicate material, and a zipper or velcro can cause holes, a seam can fray or wear out, and you end up with holes in your favorite garment. But don't worry, to repair holes in woolen garments you don't need much more than a needle and thread.

“You should always try to repair the clothes you love,” says Collinda. “For wool products, the following applies, the faster you repair the hole, the faster you can keep wearing it. A small hole quickly becomes bigger and repairing it just becomes harder.”

Damage caused by wear and tear, or simply not repairing it before it’s too late, can lead to bigger problems. But can they be solved?

Larger holes can also be repaired , but it takes a little longer and you have to be more careful so that your sewing looks good afterwards. The point is that the hole and the repair look as small as possible. If the hole is so large that you cannot wrinkle the edges, you can repair it with Woolfiller . With Woolfiller you felt the wool to the garment. We would like to briefly explain how this works: the wool fiber has scales, which open when you pierce them with a felting needle, the open scales stick to each other and do not come loose. Not even in the wash! Of course, you can also easily repair small holes with Woolfiller. Another option for a larger hole in your wool garment is to repair the hole with a piece of cloth from another wool garment.

Tip! If your favorite old wool sweater is beyond saving, keep it as part of your "repair kit."

Handcraft vs. Machine

You may be wondering if you need a sewing machine? Collinda's tip is: no! To repair holes in wool garments, sewing by hand is almost always the fastest, easiest and neatest way.

Do you have any tips for beginners to start repairing clothes themselves?

"Buy a needle and thread, take your time and work in good light. A little patience is also a good idea."

And what should you look out for? Are there classic mistakes that you should avoid?

“Make sure you sew into the stitches of large wool sweaters and that you hold the sides of the hole tightly, otherwise the hole will start to fray further down,” advises Collinda, who has created a simple step-by-step guide to make the job easier.

How to repair a wool sweater:

-Find needle and thread
-Choose yarn in the same color as the garment.
-Cut about 40 cm of thread. It should not be too long, because that will only make the -work more difficult.
-Sew with single or double thread, single for the thinnest wool garments.
-Knot the end of the thread.
-Trim the ends so they are even.
-Attach the wire to the back of one edge of the hole.
-Pull the needle up through the same point.
-Place the stitches 2-3 mm above and below the hole.
-Pull gently as you go.
-Repeat this until the end of the hole.
-Finally, tie off the thread.

Have fun with your repaired garment!
